Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Smoking is bad for you (Fire at Capitol Lounge)

Capitol Lounge, Washington, DCCapitol Lounge in better days.

Overheard someone saying that the fire started with a discarded cigarette in a trash can. The first floor seems ruined. I'm sure that they'll rebuild. The weekend breakfasts will be missed. Puts a different take on the proposed smoking ban in restaurants... By the time I left the block, trucks were already there, breaking apart and removing the burned materials discarded on the sidewalk. There's a chance that photos may have been taken of firefighters putting out the fire. If so they likely will be posted at www.dcfd.com.

Best wishes to Joe Englert and his team on pulling Capitol Lounge back together.
