Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

More on New Orleans

In "The Jewel of the South: Can New Orleans recover its cultural richness?," professor and writer Witold Rybcynski makes an interesting point about rebuilding New Orleans. He makes the point that these days, center cities are much less important in the political scheme of things and that compared to cities like San Francisco in 1906, New Orleans is poor.

Fortunately, this email from Preservation Action says that many of New Orlean's historic districts seem to be okay.

Patty Gay of the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans and a longtime board member of Preservation Action, is having difficulty reaching her board, staff, and preservationists in New Orleans. She has set up a yahoo account for people to reach her and wanted us to distribute this to those who may need the information. The yahoo account is: prcnola@yahoo.com. Please pass this information along to anyone who may be trying to get in touch with Patty.

She also wanted to relay that she has received reports that, fortunately, historic districts from St. Charles Avenue to the river suffered little water and wind damage. However, it is likely other areas of the city will need extensive restoration efforts. Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans is establishing a preservation disaster relief fund for this purpose.
