Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Times (Square) Change(s)

The Gotham Gazette has an interesting article on how 42nd Street in Manhattan has changed over the past 20 years. While lots of new buildings were constructed, a goodly part of the success has been built on historic preservation and rehabilitation of theaters and other historic buildings. It's been cleaned up, but "touristified." Balancing destination development (or redevelopment) between locals and outsiders is always difficult.
