Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Non-asset based neighborhood revitalization

Elise Bernard's Frozen Tropics blog alerts us to the demolition of this building that was at the corner of 12th and K Streets NE. It looked to be from the period 1892-1915. The site is going to be redeveloped as condominiums.

I have no problem with that, but couldn't the building have been incorporated into the new project? The neighborhood is experiencing rebirth because of the historic building stock, not despite it.
