Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

More TK (printers mark = to come)

The National Trust for Historic Preservation conference is over. I went to at leat 5 great sessions that transformed my thinking in some ways, and went on some interesting tours. Have learned a lot about Portland. No, it's not perfectly clean or the best place in the world. But it is pretty, has a great transit infrastructure (of course, more people ride the X bus on H Street than the Portland Streetcar...), and has an amazing base of independent retail, perhaps even better than New York City (after all, places like Union Square are now rimmed with chains). The Portland Farmers Market yesterday was absolutely awesome, probably the best street farmer's market I've ever experienced, with products ranging from lamb to vinegar, Oregon cheese to wines, etc.

More about all this, including photos, starting tomorrow.
