Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Safeway's wasted opportunity

Safeway's wasted opportunity

I am working on a paper about how urban supermarkets can take better advantage of their location.

This Safeway store is the model for the coming store at 5th and L Streets NW.

It is pretty, but wastes its urban location.

It has a flower section and a Starbucks, and food preparation and produce on the window sides, with no openings to the street! other than the main entrances--one at each end of the block.

You'll see as I post other photos, how this is blown.

I hope there is still time to get Safeway to think more creatively for their store in DC.
