Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

How about this for a sense of place and history?

Yahoo! News Photo.jpgHundreds of sheep are driven in the annual parade through Madrid, Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005. The annual parade is held to protest the destruction of the country's ancient transhumance routes, used to lead livestock to the high pastures for the summer months in late May and early June and back to lower pasture in early October. The system evolved during the middle ages and endured until the 20th century but then broke down due to industrialisation and the movement of country people to the cities.
