Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

When "Absolutely, Positively Overnight" meets "Your Branch Office"

I get so sick of the unreliability of Kinkos stores. I used to complain by calling the 800 number but it did no good.

When I went to copy something Saturday morning, the store on 7th Street was closed due to electrical problems. The store on the 1600 block of K St. NW was about to close because the staff didn't show up for work. So I went to the store on the 2000 block of K St. NW, where 3 of the 4 public machines were out of order. (And the first two computers I went to, the card reader didn't work.)

One of the problems with "Your Branch Office" is that people go there when they need to do things NOW. Who goes to Kinkos and prints up something they need in five days?

Constant lack of working machines is a problem. Granted there are barriers to entry. Now that Kinkos is owned by FedEx they can muster even more money for advertising.

But certainly this kind of frequent failure presents an opportunity for someone...
