Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Community Gardener needed for Sherman Avenue

NH_Spring_before[1].JPGSherman Avenue NW, without a center median.

From Marcus Popetz:

We're progressing nicely as a community getting the median on Sherman Avenue built in the upcoming Spring. We're now in the phase where we're having to plan the actual types of perennials we'd like to plant between the trees on the median.

NH_Spring_after[1].jpgSherman Avenue rendering with a center median--of the trees, but not the flowers in between. It's of an area a bit north of where we're currently working, but the idea is the same.

Anyone out there like to do this type of garden planning work? or would like to learn? Our goals:

1) Color and beauty as much of the year as possible.
2) Native plants or non-invasive imports.
3) Hearty plants since they'll be living in a median.

I did this for my own garden so have some pointers to websites for plant lists and when they bloom and such to get you started. Contact me and I can give you some more ideas and budget concerns and such.
