Lower Cost travel for the young and "creative"

Youth Hostel, Washington, DCYouth Hostel on 11th Street NW, Washington, DC.

Today's Post has an article about hostels in the Mid-Atlantic, "Hostel Sleepover: With a mix of ages and nationalities, the least expensive lodging can also be the most fun. Hostels are a good source for low-cost lodging, and are particularly utilized by college and slightly post-college age people from around the world.

For awhile I've been thinking about "youth" and "senior" hostels as being an important element of opening a community up to different segments of tourism, especially the young, and travelers from other countries.

I think the fact that Baltimore and Pittsburgh (and Cleveland and Detroit) don't have youth hostels is a bad thing, and that part of the planning processes in these communities to enhance cultural heritage tourism would be to foster the development of such facilities.
