Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Mount Vernon Triangle

Mt. Vernon Triangle banner

Have you seen the Mount Vernon Triangle BID website? I hadn't, Michael Schade pointed it out to me. As he says, "I actually hate these ambiguous web sites that are all style and no substance. They don't even say who they are."

In this case, "They" are the developers who fund this BID hybrid, it's actually a Community Improvement District since the way the BID funding formula works, based on built commercial space, they wouldn't be able to generate the necessary funds for "market development." So they got the law passed that they needed to create an alternative funding scenario.

The management of this BID is contracted to the Downtown DC BID and the Capitol Hill BID has the contract for the street cleaning services. (And they are out there cleaning the streets. I haven't taken any photos, but every morning you see people cleaning along Massachusetts Avenue, despite the construction on the east side of the street.)

And in fairness to the group, they have a number of downloadable documents explaining what they're working to accomplish.
