Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

City Living Detroit

Girl-in-the-D has a nice entry about Detroit's version of a city living promotion campaign, City Living Detroit. (DC did it once, but probably didn't feel the need to continue it, plus the key organizer left DC Government. Baltimore has the incredible Live Baltimore campaign that is a nationwide best practices leader.)

One thing they are doing is linking tours to the expo--bus tours take people to 8 different buildings around the city. This is similar to a suggestion I made to DC Government after the first (and apparently last) City Living Expo, to create a Downtown DC apartment and condominium house tour. I suggested linking this up with model home layouts "dressed" by DC-based home furnishings stores and interior designers, ranging from Urban Essentials on U Street, to the home furnishings department at Hecht's (soon to be Macy's). I still think it's worth doing, especially as the market begins to soften. (I even suggested that Hecht's could be approached to be the lead sponsor.)

City Living Detroit is holding their event in conjunction with the Michigan Home and Garden show. That's a natural cross-promotion opportunity that more of us in other cities should think about.
