Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

From Steve Pinkus:

Next Monday (March 20) from 6:30 to 9 PM there will be an open house and expert speaker forum on integrating transit improvements (BRT or LRT) and transit- and pedestrian- oriented land use in the revitalization of the Columbia Pike Corridor in South Arlington. The event is being held at the Sheraton National Hotel at 900 S. Orme Street, Arlington

Click here for the flyer for the event, here for information on current enhanced bus services, and here for the Columbia Pike Transit Initiative.
________
I think that the current "Pike Ride" initiatives are the first instance of WMATA specially marketing and enhancing bus services outside of the normal, staid, somewhat bureaucratic Metrobus model.

There are proposals to do something similar on H Street NE as well as Georgia Avenue NW in DC.

Unfortunately as I will be traveling, I won't be able to make this meeting.
