Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Walking tour

Walking tour

I went on the walking tour of Bloomingdale today, sponsored by CulturalTourismDC's Walking Town project, for two reasons--to see some of the Bloomingdale neighborhood, which I don't know much about, and because the tour was led by Marie Johns, one of the Democratic Party candidates for Mayor of DC.

The tour started at the intersection of 1st and U Streets NW, next to the You Street Market.

You Street Market, BloomingdaleI checked out the Market's "beverage" department and I was surprised that they didn't have the 99 cent promotional cans of Arizona Iced Tea, although they did have plenty of Rock Creek Soda in 2 liter bottles (very sweet). They had Perrier Water, Beck's Beer, and three different flavors of Mad Dog 20/20.

Marie Johns said, with feeling, the right things about cultural heritage.
