Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Pay Up (Glasgow)

Pay Up For Glasgow Campaign From City Strolls.

The UK has a council tax, which is basically a property tax collected by local governments. The monies are used to fund local projects of various sorts.

City Strolls is a ground-up citizens blog in Glasgow with a clear advocacy perspective. There are a variety of civic engagement resources on the blog. And commentary.

The Glasgow government produced a campaign called "Pay Up," to market the council tax and what it accomplishes, including information such as this:

Where every £1 of your Council Tax goes:

- 34p Schools and Education
- 2p Social Work
- 17p Fire & Police
- 7p Cultural & Leisure
- 4p Environmental Protection & Refuse Collection
- 4p Roads and Lighting
- 3p Development and Regeneration
- 2p Transport Subsidies & Concessionary Travel
- 8p Other Services

(Actually I wouldn't mind seeing such straightforward information distributed in DC.)

The ad above is one of six produced by Bob, the City Strolls webmaster. It and the others in the series comment on what he sees as the very pro-developer pro-Growth Machine policies of the local government and the privatization of public assets.
