Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Stuff to do tomorrow

1. Shaw Heritage Trail Unveiling and Shaw Open House

From Alex Padro:

After years in development, the Shaw Heritage Trail, consisting of 17 poster-sized, permanent street signs that combine history with photographs, has been installed and will be officially unveiled at a ceremony at the Kennedy Recreation Center, 1401 7th Street, NW, on Saturday, May 6, 2006, at 11:00 AM (Metro: Green and Yellow Lines, Mount Vernon Square/7th Street-Convention Center Station).

Following the kickoff, which will feature performances by the Shiloh Baptist Church Choir and the United House of Prayer Royal Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, come join neighborhood residents and visitors from throughout the city and the metropolitan area and be among the first to walk our heritage trail. All events are free and open to the public.

In celebration of the trail's debut, dozens of Shaw businesses and institutions will welcome visitors in for refreshments and samples of their offerings as part of Shaw Open House, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A moon bounce will be available at the Kennedy Recreation Center for kids' enjoyment. Pick up a free trail booklet, available in English and Spanish. A map and list of participating open house sites will be distributed at the Kennedy Recreation Center.
