Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

1. Community Meeting: Rail on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge & Alexandria’s Transit Future
7 - 8:30 PM, Thursday, May 11, 2006
George Washington Middle School (cafeteria), 1005 Mt Vernon Ave, Alexandria
Metro: Braddock Road Metro Station [Yellow/Blue Lines]

The new Woodrow Wilson Bridge is engineered to accommodate Metrorail. Adding rail would connect the Yellow Line in Virginia with the Green Line in Maryland. But it’s not a done deal yet. Without rail, Old Town Alexandria neighborhoods could face gridlock as additional traffic from the expanded bridge crowds the narrow streets.

What could rail mean for Alexandria residents concerned about traffic, air pollution, and the rising cost of gasoline? With new studies ahead, now is the time to make your voice heard. Read more about this campaign.

· For more information and directions, call 202-237-0754, or the Sierra Club website.
