Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

White Man's Road ... thru Black Man's Home! (photograph of the exhibit)

I already have a copy of this image from another online source, but I was practicing shooting. It's at the DDOT 50th anniversary of the Interstate Freeways exhibit at Union Station.

There are some good images on display. And DDOT included a big section on the protests against the freeways, including this image by Sammie Abbott, an organizer of the Emergency Committee on the Transportation Crisis, and later Mayor of Takoma Park.

Because of the flash, I would have discarded this image, but the serendipitous capture of a person in the "gap" makes it more interesting.
