Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Another way to say f*u to the street (Black Cat on 14th Street NW)

Black Cat is a great music place, but they really aren't very nice to their fellow businesses on 14th Street NW, by treating their facade as if it were a vacant building, boarded up and forlorn.

Studio Theater photo by Eye CaptainHow hard would it be for Black Cat to put images in the windows?, such as how Studio Theater does so a few blocks away at 14th and P Streets NW. Photo by Eye Captain.
Bohemian CavernsFlickr photo by Katie Kellert. Bohemian Caverns on U Street. One, look what they do with their windows. Two, look how they communicate "music" through their signage and use of neon.
