Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

For the love of God, could someone please put in new light bulbs, like once a year perhaps? For a placed with as much good press as this place, hailed as U St's hometown favorite... please please please get some new yellow light bulbs! 1213 U St NW, Washington DC.

I am always surprised by the number of business proprietors who aren't conscious about the outward appearance of their operation, which of course, is the very first thing customers and prospects see.

Many years ago, I was showing someone H Street (a journalist) and she commented that "Oh, the Riggs Bank must be closed" because there was a broken window pane. Nope, it was open, but the staff never bothered to report the broken pane to facilities management. (After my complaint, they fixed this.) And this is-was a major institution.

I call this The soft side of commercial district competition
