Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The Ellington: Another example of a decently designed large housing building

On U Street. I like the industrial and post-WWII look. The neon sign is a nice touch. The window treatments are pretty good. Etc.

This is a Donatelli & Klein project, which is why if it's a project that they are doing, I'm inclined to think it will likely be decent.

Again, these debates are why I say that the "Urban Design" element is the most important element of the Comprehensive Plan, more important even than Land Use. (LU is #2, Transportation #3, Economic Development maybe #4).
