Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Chief Ramsey was involved in some of the development of modern community policing. This poster is from Chicago. I think that Chief Ramsey is a lot better than people give him credit for (well, maybe except for civil liberties). A city like DC is a tough place to "work." Our political culture doesn't seem to be that willing to make some of the hard choices.

And we need to deal with these issues as more than a "crime" problem, but one of how to we work to assist people that need it. I think of Rayful Edmonds a lot. The guy is brilliant., was a great "entrepreneur." But he saw no other opportunities.

If we had great schools, great libraries, great recreational and other programs, maybe things could be different. Chief Ramsey talks about those things a lot too, but it could be better articulated...

Instead of spending all that money on hiring more police officers, and overtime, how about extending the school year, considering a "year round" school calendar, having summer school enrichment programs so great that kids wanted to enroll in them, having libraries open til 10 pm (when curfew hits), cooperative education programs, etc.
