Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Veteran Rail and Industrial Executive Alexander Kummant Appointed Amtrak President and CEO

Forlorn Amtrak sign
According to the report from Mass Transit Magazine.

Mass Transit also has the article, "An Amtrak Report Card," in the July/August issue, which you can probably access digitally, by David J. Hughes, the acting president. He says:

- ticket revenue is forecast to reach a record
- with fewer employees
- and great improvements in safety (injury rates have been reduced significantly
- Keystone corridor improvements between Philadelphia and Harrisburg will allow speeds to be raised to 110 mph.

But as we know there are still issues of investment in infrastructure, given the power failures earlier this summer.

And the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports about proposed reductions of service in Southern Virginia. See "Alarmed over Amtrak: Jamestown birthday may be affected if it cuts Tidewater train."

And speaking of record fares, more than one person argues that by not providing breaks on fares for commuters, Amtrak discourages train usage. See "Commuter-killer clause is making fares unfair," by Rick Booth.
