Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

A post in the Planetizen Radar blog feed has a comment related to one of the photos in this stream. It reminds me of a story during the Mayoralty of Marion Barry. There was an abandoned car in the Shaw area. After repeated calls, the resident still couldn't get the car towed away. He finally spray painted "Barry's DC" on it and it was gone within a day.

You have to be strategic in your graffiti.

On the other hand, the company that owns this project hasn't bothered to "fix" this sign, which has been like this for 3-4 months, which is another kind of "qualitative" indicator of the softening of the real estate market.
