Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Color corrected FSA photo

Color corrected FSA photo
Originally uploaded by rllayman.
This is from Jason Kottke's Kottke.org. Jason Kottke color-corrected some of the Farm Security Agency photos shot in color during the 1930s.

Here's one from Southeast DC (since destroyed in favor of urban renewal), not color-corrected. Still beautiful.
shulman1Photo by Louise Rosskam, late 1930s. Photo of Shulman's Market. (I have never done a directory search to figure out where this was.)
