Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Speaking about the "soft side" of commercial district revitalization, is this article from Fast Casual's e-newsletter, "Clean restrooms equal happy customers." Granted it reports on research from Kimberly-Clark and others. Like litter, it's seemingly obvious but often ignored. Clean + pretty is better than Dirty + nondescript.

I tell you, if you go to the restroom at Red Sage, you'll understand. Spiffy...

And again, this is an issue that women typically pay more attention to than men. Why does this matter? Well, women typically conduct upwards of 80% of all retail transactions. Making women happy and comfortable is essential to commercial district success.
