Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Save the River Oaks / Alabama Theaters (Houston)

As written about in Save the River Oaks / Alabama Theaters in the Houston Photobloggers blog, and in Shopping center show down in the Retail Design Diva blog. (It's always nice to see an industry publication recognize the importance of historic preservation.)

Given that Houston is big on having no zoning regulations (although they get around this with restrictive covenants)and property rights, it's also nice to see people recognize the importance of these buildings. (And I love old theaters, neon, and marquees myself. I mean, old streetcars look cool, but they tend to be uncomfortable. Not old theaters...)

This has also been written up in the New York Times, in Fighting the Wrecking Ball to Save Houston Landmarks and there is an online petition, Save the River Oaks Shopping Center & Alabama Theater Petition.
