Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Artistic recycling bins for downtown streets

Artistic recycling bins for city streetsA large crowd gathered yesterday at Lescano Gallery in Great Barrington to see the artistic recycling bins designed by area artists. The bins will be moved onto the streets in the downtown today. Darren Vanden Berge / Berkshire Eagle Staff.

From "The Art of Recycling" in the Berkshire Eagle and it's a good example of looking at everything you (your city, your commercial district revitalization organization, community organization, etc.) do through the lens of multiple objectives, and working to achieve multiple objectives simultaneously.

With a single project, the City of Great Barrington Massachusetts successfully promotes:

-- the environment;
-- cleaner streets;
-- recycling;
-- public art; and
-- opportunities for local artists.
