Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

PARK(ing) Day Scheduled for Thursday, September 21

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco-based art collective REBAR, with support from The Trust for Public Land (TPL), will create a series of PARK(ing) installations throughout the city of San Francisco. Last November REBAR opened eyes worldwide by transforming a metered parking spot into a PARK, complete with sod, a bench and a tree, reclaiming the street for parks and people...at least until the meter ran out!

Join REBAR as they bring PARK(ing) Day to downtown San Francisco parking spots.

WHEN: Thursday, September 21, 2006, from 9:30 AM to 5 PM Celebration Party at 5 PM at Hotel Triton and Enoteca Viansa (see directions below)

WHERE: Downtown San Francisco. PARK(ing) Day destinations include:

Park 1 9:30 am Mission between 5th and 6th
Park 2 11:30 am 7th and between Mission and Market
Park 3 1:15 pm Mission between 1st and 2nd
Park 4 2:45 pm Howard between 1st and 2nd
Park 5 4:30 pm Grant and Sutter in front of the Hotel Triton.

WHY:

Call attention to the need for more urban parks and public places.
Connect with ways to permanently reclaim urban space for people.
Celebrate the pleasure of parks and demonstrate improved urban human habitat. Learn about TPL's program to create and renovate parks for people.

PARTY: Join REBAR at the PARK(ing) Day Party hosted by Kimpton Hotels. The Hotel Triton is located at 342 Grant Avenue between Sutter and Bush. Enoteca Viansa Wine Bar is located at 334 Grant St. Celebration begins at 5 PM.

A representative from the Mayor's office is scheduled for the Viansa at 5 PM. VISUALS: Installation of a park in parking spaces. Passersby reacting. Meet the artists and TPL.
