Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Expanding our idea of historic preservation

According to the Denver Rocky Mountain News, Historic Denver has chosen to honor Joyce Meskis, proprietor of the Tattered Cover bookstore. With three locations, this independent bookstore is considered to be one of the best U.S. bookstores. From the article:

• Ann Love Award: Established to honor the wife of former Gov. John Love and celebrate people who may not consider themselves traditional preservationists but have shown initiative, creativity and commitment to preserving history, culture and architecture of Denver. The honoree is Joyce Meskis, who moved her flagship Tattered Cover Book Store from Cherry Creek North to the Lowenstein Theater.

There's something to be said about acknowledging the independent retail sector more generally, as well as its culture promoting aspects. It doesn't get much better than the Tattered Cover.
