Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The important role of historic preservation

From "Board members reject plastic letters for religious slogan," in North Carolina's Salisbury Post:

Members of the Salisbury Historic Preservation Commission don't have a problem adding the words "In God We Trust" to the front of the Rowan County Administrative Building. But they're a little more picky about what the words will be made of. Commission members unanimously rejected Thursday evening a request to use plastic letters on the building. ...

At Thursday's meeting, Sides asked to change the original plan to use cast metal letters and go with plastic ones for safety.

Sides explained that the lettering will be affixed to the front of the building with tape and epoxy. In approving the addition months ago, the commission said letters would be attached to the building without bolts or drilling holes, so the building wouldn't be permanently marred.

The letters already on the building are, however, drilled into a stone panel.
