Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

This week's City Paper is full of goodies

Has at least three great pieces.

1. I am a big fan of signage, especially old billboards and neon, and Darrow Montgomery has a photo essay of old signs, "Sign Languish," some from the Greater H Street neighborhood, where I've taken some decent photos over the years.

Here's my version of two of Darrow's photos.

2. Dave McKenna's Cheapseats column is about the Uline Arena and the landmark nomination, which is up to be heard next Thursday. See "Arena Football."

3. Loose Lips, the City Paper's weekly column on local politics, as always, is great. Unfortunately, the Choi Family's bagmen (Vincent Orange, Jack Evans, Kwame Brown, John Ray) are making odious progress in terms of moving the destruction of the Florida Market forward. It will be a tough few weeks to see if this terrible terrible bill can be warded off. I'm not hopeful. They have money to throw around. We only have justice on our side. In this city, justice gets short shrift.
