Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

"Self-help" in transit

The News-Review.jpgKyle Baker gets the job done the hard way as he crawls under a bus shelter frame to pound in a rivet Friday morning. With help from his father, Mike, and his friend Clayton Wadsworth in the background, the trio finished building a bus shelter along Harvard Avenue Friday morning for Baker's Eagle Scout project. I guess we should appreciate the Adshel contract that DC's DDOT signed to improve the state of bus shelters in DC's commercial districts and neighborhoods. See Clear Channel Bus Shelter Program for info on the program in DC.

This article from the Roseburg, Oregon News-Review, "Gimme shelter: Eagle Scout candidates install bus shelters for their service projects," discusses how a area transit system had the money to buy some bus shelters, but not the money to install the shelters.

I am looking forward to the results of the bus shelter improvement program in DC because it will also include a system of rentable bikes that will work just like carsharing services such as Flexcar and Zipcar.
