Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Virginia Light Rail Symposium Friday

Electric streetcars in Richmond, Virginia (1888?)Electric streetcars in Richmond, Virginia (1888?).

(Unfortunately, I think I will miss this. The opening presentation features Rick Gustafson, the director of Portland Streetcar.)

Our friends at the Virginia Association of Railway Patrons are sponsoring a Light Rail Symposium in Richmond this Friday. According to the program, five communities: Arlington-Fairfax (streetcar); Norfolk; Richmond; Charlottesville; and Roanoke are working on developing fixed rail transit systems.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch did a nice feature on the upcoming symposium and fixed rail transit, its economic development potential, and the status of various projects in Virginia, with a sidebar about how electric streetcars were invented and first implemented in Richmond by Frank Sprague. As usual, the images didn't make it to the online version of the article, "Light rail: born and reborn in Virginia."
