Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Music at the Downtown Holiday Market

The Downtown Holiday Market has 3 more days to run after today. It's been pretty successful thus far. After seeing what a dog it was last year (lousy location, and cold besides) this has been a real step forward. Congratulations to Diverse Markets Management and the Downtown BID for making it happen.

It runs from noon each day and stay open late, ntil 7 p.m., and is located on the wide sidewalk of F Street, between 7th and 8th Streets NW, in front of the newly reopened Smithsonian Museum of American Art and National Portrait Gallery.

Also given the success of the market during evening hours, especially during events at Verizon Center, I can see them extending hours next year, at least on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. (The holiday markets in Manhattan are open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.)

Also see this AP article, "Germany's Christmas markets mix tradition, hot wine, pastries and gifts."
