Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

On the bus

I was looking up something for a future blog entry and came across the website for the Centre Area Transportation Authority in the State College/Centre County region of Pennsylvania. According to the "About CATA" section of their website:

"Bus riding is made problem-free and enjoyable when you know the basic fundamentals of bus transportation."

And to provide lessons on those fundamentals, they have a bunch of videos that explain how to use the bus system, including a nice one on bike racks (which I wish I had seen before the first time I attempted to use a bike rack!).

-- VIDEO: "Introduction to Bus 101"
-- How to read your bus schedule: Sample Schedule w/instructions
-- VIDEO: "Reading your CATA Schedule"
-- How to ride the bus/Rider conduct: Stops, Boarding/Deboarding, Paying Fares and Conduct on the bus
-- VIDEO: "Bus Riding Fundamentals"
-- VIDEO: "Riding Etiquette"
-- How to use the bike racks:
- Five-step instructions with pictures
- VIDEO: "Use of Bicycle Racks"

Although I am thinking they need to produce a video that better explains the lyrics to the song by the Replacements "Kiss Me On The Bus."

Speaking of a song to use in transit marketing... although maybe it wouldn't resonate with younger people. However, you could do an album of interpretations of this song, featuring musicians representing different music genres (go go, rap, blues, punk, treacly pop, emo, rock en espanol, etc.) . Problem solved.
