Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Stuff to do on Saturday in NW DC

1. Cultural Tourism DC launches a new heritage trail this Saturday in Mt. Pleasant. It will be unveiled at 11:30 a.m., featuring Councilmember Jim Graham and Mayor-Elect Adrian Fenty and others, followed by a stroll and the Mount Pleasant Business Association Holiday Party in Lamont Park from 1-3 pm.

2. If you ask me, it's also an opportunity to stop in for arguably the best Vegetarian Chili in the city at Dos Gringos on Mt. Pleasant Street NW. (While there you can also pick up a copy of the trail booklet, "Village in the City: The Mount Pleasant History Trail.")

3. And it looks like there will be an interesting "art fair" featuring local artisans in the Petworth neighborhood, on Saturday also, from 11am to 5pm at Domku and Shaka King Fine Menswear boutique (821 and 825 Upshur Street, NW), featuring 20+ exhibitors. I'm curious to see how this works.
