Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Save our Schools press conference tomorrow

Black Social Capital: The Politics of School Reform in Baltimore
From Lee Glazer:

The Save Our Schools Coalition is holding a press conference tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 6 at 6 pm at the main entrance of the Convention Center (801 Mt. Vernon Place, between 7th & 9th Streets NW) to remind Mayor Fenty that his "mandate" is a people's mandate.

As the Mayor's invitation says, "black tie optional," but get dressed up, put on your dancing shoes and come downtown to the Inaugural Ball an hour early, at 6:00 pm, to claim Mayor Fenty's victory for the communities who voted for him and to articulate a real community-based action agenda for public education, as well as affordable housing, health care, and public property, including parks and libraries This is the first in a series of events planned by SOS in collaboration with other activists around the city who fear that Fenty's populism may have been nothing more than a convenient campaign strategy.
