Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Barn Again program a model for urban areas...

From "Faeths among 5 BARN AGAIN award winners," in the Fort Madison (Iowa) Daily Democrat:

Mr. and Mrs. Loren Faeth of Fort Madison were among the five winners of the 2007 national BARN AGAIN! award. Successful Farming magazine has teamed up with The National Trust for Historic Preservation for the past 20 years to recognize the importance of rural heritage in the United States. Each year, barn owners who put forth exceptional efforts to preserve and maintain their historic barns are presented with the BARN AGAIN! Farm Heritage Award.

The winners receive a BARN AGAIN! plaque, $1,000 check and a one-year honorary membership to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Also, each winning barn owner appears in an editorial feature in the mid-March Successful Farming issue.

BARN AGAIN! is a national program that helps owners rehabilitate their historic barns to use on farms and ranches. The program provides technical assistance through a BARN AGAIN! hotline, rehabilitation guides, sponsored workshops, exhibits and events, and the annual award program to recognize the best examples.

This is comparable to the Historic Bungalow Expo in Chicago, or even Takoma Park's Green Building Expo coming up in a couple weeks.

We need to do similar activities in DC.
