Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

A college student riding the Septa 44 bus

Steve Eldridge, the transit columnist for the Examiner, wrote a column a couple weeks ago, recounting his experience with a teenager in the Northern Virginia suburbs--she wouldn't ride the bus to get to the mall (2 miles from her house) because of the muggers and such on the bus.

At some stop on the 44 bus line a bunch of college students got on (not St. Joseph's, not PCOM).

I can't imagine that the suburban teen would think this woman is a mugger.
