Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Resizing institutions

1. For more than one decade, I have argued that the Attorney General of the United States should be a nationally elected position, because the law of the land belongs to the People of the United States, not to political parties or to the President. (The President has a legal operation, legal counsel, etc.)

The firing prosecutors debacle is but one example. See "It's not just about fired US attorneys anymore: Congress is asking pointed questions about the role of partisanship in prosecutions, hirings at Justice Department" from the Christian Science Monitor.

2. And then there is the new initiative by Whole Foods Market to "buy local," which includes a loan and technical assistance program for small farmers.
