Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Graffiti on a car at Park Road and Georgia Avenue NW

I complained awhile ago that if people like the Borf Contingent really wanted to fight anomie they could demonstrate it by tagging cars out in suburbia. Here's an example of graffiti tagging of a car in DC. The car is on a lot adjoining the Cluck U at Georgia Avenue. It's probably part of the "fast food" business' property. I put "fast food" in quotes given the controversy of how to treat this particular company's business in the context of DC Zoning regulations. (See "Whose H Street Is It, Anyway?," subtitled "A Dispute Over Restaurant Zoning Creates a Chasm Between Northeast Washington's Old and New Residents" from the Post.) In any case, we would expect better maintenance of the property, and the towing away of abandoned vehicles.
