Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Grocery store on Newkirk Plaza, at the Q line subway station

Grocery store off Coney Island Ave. in Ditmas Pak, Brooklyn

I probably took more photos like these, than of anything else. I appreciate how grocery stores in NYC merchandise their wares, often by being open to the street, and putting their produce and flowers in front of the store, "just like in the old days."

I find it hard to believe that modern supermarket operators have forgotten this lesson when they open urban stores. (This includes Safeway.) And certainly, managers from the national supermarket companies must visit New York City from time to time?
