Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Using the recycling cans, Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn

DC needs to step it up... all the new streetscape projects should incorporate recycling into the street furniture and waste management systems (i.e., trash cans/waste receptacles) on the street at least in high use commercial districts.

Now that I think about it, NYC has such cans in limited places, not everywhere.

Just east of 16th Street NW, on K Street.

Oh, and why did the downtown BID replace larger waste receptacles with smaller ones? Unless they've increased the pick up frequency--doubtful--this makes little sense. Do they really think people will size their trash throwing frequency to the capacity of the containers on the street?
