Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Michael Pinsky's "Come Hell or High Water" and the Tyne Bridge, Newcastle

At the CUA library, I am reading a recent issue of Green Places, the publication by the UK equivalent of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Maybe three years ago, they relaunched their journal to be about making great places. The issue is full of good stuff, including a couple pages about a public art project by Michael Pinsky around the conversion of a ring road into a two way road. Now, the images I really like, such as making a pedestrian crosswalk marking in the shape of a shoeprint, aren't online at the project's website.

This is another of his projects.
