Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Community Festivals: Takoma Park vs. DC

Takoma Park has a couple of big festivals, the Street Festival, Takoma Park JazzFest and the Takoma Park Folk Festival. The city provides some financial support to these festivals. The City of Takoma Park does not charge the festivals for trash removal or for police services. DC charges for such services. (Although it is possible to get support from the Mayor's Constitutent Services Fund to cover the cost of police services.) And the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities is providing some support to neighborhood festivals.
