Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Lack of reliability will kill transit success

I was in a hurry and to save 10-12 minutes I decided to take the subway from Union Station to Brookland instead of biking. Mechanical difficulties with another car meant the trip took not quite 25 minutes. I should have just stayed on my bike... Too bad the system was designed with little in the way of track redundancy.
