Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

When people from other places write stories about what you know

1. The New York Times writes about Mayor Fenty. See "Starting Fast, With an Eye on the Long Run."

2. The Hartford Courant writes about the region's subway system, in making a point about what Connecticut should do. But I don't think the story is analytical enough about what works, where and why. See "How Light Rail Transformed D.C.." For one, DC is a heavy rail system with dedicated right-of-way, with a lot of trackage underground. It's a lot faster than light rail. And that makes a big difference in terms of "take up" of the innovation.
