Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

This previously nondescript shopping center on 10th Street just north of the Brookland subway station is an art deco example of a "park and shop," similar to the more ornate center in Cleveland Park, it is another example of Brookland's roots as a "suburb" first created around the railroad and streetcar, and then adapted for the automobile.

The issue of landmarking is being discussed on the Brookland and HistoricWashington e-lists right now.
