Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

No parking in alley sign

Another photo for Will. (From the same alley in the Fan District.) Note that I have blogged about this alley garden project before as it won an award from Southern Living Magazine and was written up in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, which is how I learned about it.

This is the first time I actually scouted out and found the alley. I did knock on the door of the creator, Calder Loth, senior architectural historian for the State of Virginia. He was home, and he showed us around his private backyard gardens as well.
